Do I need counseling?

What is counseling?

Counseling is defined by the American Counseling Association as “a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education, and career goals.” People visit a counselor for many reasons including life changes, feelings of anxiety or depression, trouble connecting with others, family life issues, and a number of other reasons. Some people choose to visit a counselor just a couple of times to work through a specific issue, others go for longer periods of time, and some want long term support and see a counselor for many years. Just as each person is unique so is each person’s situation.

What to expect the first time.

When you visit a counselor for the first time, it can feel overwhelming. There is usually a lot of paperwork you are asked to fill out beforehand. I like to think of the first visit as just getting to know each other. The counselor will usually ask a lot of questions and maybe even take some notes. Your only job is to be as honest as you feel comfortable. You do not have to share your deepest, darkest secrets on the first visit (or any visit for that matter).

One thing to keep in mind is if you feel comfortable with the counselor. Every counselor has a different style and it is okay if you decide it is not a good fit. I would suggest giving it at least three to four visits before you make that decision.
